That Man from Rio

Airman Adrien Dufourquet leaves his garrison to visit his fiancée Agnès in Paris. He hopes for a quiet week, but his plans begin to unravel as danger closes in on them.

Two South American Indians steal an Amazonian statuette from the Musée de l'Homme and abduct Professor Catalan, the exhibition's curator. Catalan is Agnès' father's expedition companion, and he believes the statuette is part of a larger treasure.

Adrien arrives at Agnès' flat just as the kidnapping unfolds, and he is the only person who knows where Agnès' father's statuette is hidden. He vows to recover both his fiancée and the statue, setting the pursuit in motion.

Adrien pursues the criminals to the airport, where he steals a ticket and boards the same flight to Brazil. He hopes to catch them before they slip away with the prize.

On the plane, Adrien tells the pilot that his fiancée has been kidnapped, but Agnès is drugged and does not recognize him. Tension rises as airline security contemplates arresting him for the disturbance.

After arriving in Rio de Janeiro, Adrien eludes the police and, with the help of Sir Winston, a Brazilian bootblack, he rescues Agnès from her captors. They briefly retrieve the buried statuette, only to have it stolen again by the Indians.

With Agnès safe for the moment, Adrien drives with Sir Winston toward Brasília in a stolen car to meet Senhor de Castro, the industrialist who possesses the third statuette. The road trip becomes a cross-country race against Catalan and his gang.

On the way to Brasília they encounter the Indians' car with Catalan inside and manage to pull him aboard. In Brasília, Adrien evades the pursuing gang by crossing between two skyscrapers under construction on a cable.

Adrien and Agnès attend a party in their honor hosted by De Castro, who believes the statuette will be kept safe. Catalan murders De Castro and steals the statuette, abducting Agnès again as the criminals escape in a seaplane.

Adrien steals a plane to follow the criminals toward the seaplane's route. He remains determined to rescue Agnès and recover the statuette.

In Lola's floating jungle cafe, Adrien learns from Lola that Catalan murdered Agnès' father and that Agnès is being kept on a boat. The revelation steels him for the climactic rescue.

Adrien rushes to the boat, fights Catalan's accomplices, and rescues Agnès. He then pursues Catalan to a jungle grotto where the three statuettes align with the sun's rays to reveal the treasure.

Catalan locates the treasure, but explosions triggered by Trans-Amazonian Highway construction threaten the grotto and bury him alive. Adrien and Agnès manage to escape the scene.

The couple return to Paris and arrive just in time for Adrien to board his train back to the garrison. A sense of relief and exhaustion settles over them as the week of danger ends.

A fellow soldier later recounts the unbelievable week Adrien has endured, hinting at the stories he will tell for years. The adventure leaves an indelible mark on Adrien and Agnès as they move forward.
