The cinematic adventure kicks off at a luxurious ski chalet soiree in Gstaad, where the dashing spy Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath (also known as OSS 117) is charming the exotic Countess. However, the elegant evening swiftly descends into chaos when Red Chinese mercenaries, hired by the shadowy Mr. Lee, storm the event, leaving behind a scene of carnage and devastation. Amidst the tumult, Hubert’s attempts at bravado inadvertently result in the mishap of some of his own guests, showcasing his comical yet misguided machismo.
Back at SDECE headquarters, Hubert is swiftly sent on a mission to deliver a substantial ransom of 50,000 new Francs to the notorious Professor Von Zimmel, a Nazi war criminal who escaped to South America and holds critical microfilm containing the identities of French collaborators.
Upon his arrival in Rio de Janeiro, Hubert is immediately thrust into danger as he faces relentless pursuits from the vengeful relatives of Mr. Lee’s mercenaries. Additionally, he encounters a foul-mouthed CIA agent, Bill Tremendous, whose persona echoes that of Felix Leiter, and a captivating femme fatale named Carlotta. Hubert must skillfully avoid the luchador enforcers of Professor Von Zimmel and evade relentless Mossad agents eager to capture their target and bring him to justice in Israel.
In a surprising twist, OSS 117 joins forces with Colonel Dolorès Koulechov, a striking officer in the Israeli Army, in their quest to hold Von Zimmel accountable for his atrocious deeds. As their risky mission unfolds, Hubert’s romantic instincts are stirred by two fascinating women: the enigmatic Carlotta and the notably irritated Colonel Koulechov. Despite her initial disdain for Hubert’s bold, colonialist demeanor, she gradually begins to warm up to him as they work together towards their goal. When Hubert questions her views on Brazil’s authoritarian regime, Koulechov articulately draws parallels to the totalitarian practices observed in France under Charles de Gaulle, leaving Hubert both puzzled and enlightened.
As their thrilling journey progresses, Hubert finds himself grappling with a host of counterculture phenomena, including encounters with hippies, explorations of sexuality, and an examination of gender roles across differing belief systems. This adventure is not just about espionage; it’s a journey of self-discovery that forces Hubert to confront his own biases regarding society and the prejudices that pervade it.
