Thirteen‑year‑old Ludwig is a constant prankster. At boarding school he snips the beard of his strict teacher, Captain a.D. Semmelmaier, while the man naps, prompting the captain to send him back to his Bavarian village. His patient mother persuades the rector to let him stay at the Latin school, but his sister Ännchen’s upcoming marriage to Berlin brewer Karl Schultheiss soon brings fresh challenges.
