Maisie Ravier loses her job as an assistant in Horatio Curley’s dog act after a minor quarrel with test pilot Breezy McLaughlin. Breezy manages to land Curley a position at the Victory Aircraft factory and offers to use his influence to help Maisie as well, but she remains determined to prove herself on her own merits. She secures a swing shift at the factory, and Breezy arranges a room for her at Maw Lustvogel’s boarding house, where Maisie’s feelings toward him gradually shift from skepticism to affection.
Maisie’s compassion extends beyond her own life when she stops a suicide attempt by Iris Reed, a failed actress who lives across the hall, and persuades Iris to seek work in the same place. Yet Maisie’s kindness sets off a chain of complications: Breezy is drawn more to Iris, and the two eventually become engaged. When Breezy earns his wish to join the United States Army Air Forces, he asks Maisie to look after Iris while he trains. Maisie finds this assignment tougher than expected, because Iris is a charming and trouble-prone presence who flirts with many men.
Iris loses her job and, in a quick, manipulative move, uses her charm to convince Judd Evans, a factory clerk, to cover the rent for an apartment. Iris departs without paying Maw the back rent she owes, even as Maisie hands Iris a $20 bill to help with the situation and then receives a $100 money order from Breezy. The situation worsens when Maisie discovers Judd comforting Iris after another “suicide attempt,” prompting Maisie to set boundaries.
Tension rises as Maisie orders Iris to tell Breezy that she no longer loves him when he returns on leave to marry Iris. Iris retaliates by accusing Maisie of suspicious behavior to the factory’s security department. While Maisie is under scrutiny, Iris and Breezy rush to Yuma, Arizona to wed, but Maisie’s quick thinking reveals Iris’s undermining scheme and Breezy’s role in it, revealing her as a saboteur. The authorities interrupt the plan, but Breezy’s identification helps them, and they are released. Yet the truth about Iris’s character becomes clear to Breezy, who realizes he must confront his own choices.
In the end, after a tense confrontation and a cascade of revelations, Breezy returns to Maisie. Although she hesitates at first, Maisie opts to forgive and welcome him back, choosing to face the future with the man she has come to love, while Iris’s devious plans unravel in the wake of their misadventure. The story unfolds with a steady rhythm that blends humor, romance, and the moral complexities of loyalty, trust, and personal growth within the high-stakes world of aviation work.
