The ending of The Swan leaves us with a haunting blend of reality and fantasy. After being subjected to their bullying and cruelty, Peter manages to survive a terrifying ordeal with an incredible act of resilience. When he is shot in the thigh by Ernie, he is knocked off the thin branch he is standing on, injured but still alive. As he lies there, he appears to see a white light—often symbolic of a near-death experience or spiritual awakening—and then leaps off the branch, seemingly flying in the direction of that luminous vision. Witnesses later claim to see a white swan soaring over the village, adding an almost magical or symbolic element to the story. Peter's mother finds what she believes to be her son's injured body on the lawn—an event that leaves the ending deliberately ambiguous. It raises the question of whether Peter really survived or if his flight was a fantastical, symbolic representation of hope and inner strength. The story uses these elements to explore themes of determination, faith in oneself, and the idea that sometimes, even in the face of brutal cruelty, there is a possibility of transcendence or escape. Ultimately, the ending suggests that Peter’s spirit, resilience, and belief in himself allowed him to rise above his suffering—whether in reality or in his imagination—culminating in a powerful statement about inner strength and the triumph of hope.
