Set in Vienna in 1913, a young vaudeville performer is about to marry a construction draftsman. When he is drafted, he sends her to the countryside to keep her off the stage. She defies him, returns to the city, falls for an officer, and, in despair, commits suicide. The grim original ending was rejected, and a later version rescued her; the surviving copy includes this revised conclusion.
