What Happens at the End of Starling?

The film closes with Lily finally letting go of the frantic need to destroy the starling that has haunted her garden. After she inadvertently injures the bird, Dr. Larry, now acting as a makeshift vet, operates on it and Lily brings the recovering creature back home to care for it. In caring for the wounded starling, she confronts the part of herself that has been trying to “kill” her grief rather than accept it.
Meanwhile, Jack reaches the point where he can no longer deny his depression. He opens the parcel of candy‑filled snowballs Lily has been sending, a small but tangible sign that he is allowing himself to receive love. In a candid conversation with his therapist Regina, he admits that he has been slipping in and out of depression for years and that his habit of quitting—whether on therapists or on his own hope—has left him isolated. Larry’s gentle reminder that “we are not meant to exist alone” resonates with both of them.

Jack and Lily finally speak openly about Katie, sharing the pain they have carried separately for a year. The conversation, though painful, dissolves the wall that had kept them apart, and they acknowledge that moving forward does not erase their loss—it simply allows them to carry it together.
The last scene shows the couple walking hand‑in‑hand toward the house, the two starlings fluttering nearby, a subtle promise that life—however uncertain—continues. Their grief remains a part of them, but they have learned to lean on each other rather than retreat into solitude, stepping into an uncertain future as a united pair.
