In Kamikochi, the Japanese Alps, botany professor Kazuhiko Onuma shares a mountain cabin with his lover Tsuruko. One night his wife Kazuyo confronts them about his affair; Tsuruko witnesses the clash and leaves the next morning. Over the next decade Kazuhiko returns each autumn equinox, haunted by Tsuruko’s memory and his lingering guilt.
