During a summer in the 1960s, Sonia embarks on a brief affair with her older, married teacher, Tonio. When autumn arrives Tonio leaves for a trip abroad, leaving Sonia with their shared memories. She later travels to Florence and Paris, absorbing the interwar era’s romanticism through its literature, art and music, while choosing a solitary, introspective life away from crowds, yet always retaining a vivid emotional mood.
