Liv Ulmann’s directorial debut sees her co‑writing the script with poet Peter Poulsen, adapting Henri Nathansen’s 1932 novel about an affluent late‑19th‑century Jewish merchant family in Copenhagen. It follows daughter Sofie in a forbidden romance with a gentile painter, an arranged marriage, childbirth and challenges that shape her fate.
