Bobby Fine, a professor at Chippenango State College, learns from Dr. Lincoln that he is under consideration for a tenured position. Alongside him is Professor McCarthy, raising the stakes for Bobby's academic career.

In New York City, Bobby's father, Jack Fine, struggles to keep his clothing business, Fine Fashions, afloat. He owes a large sum to a loan shark named Mr. Eddie, who threatens to take over Jack's business if the debt isn't settled.

While driving a poet to a reception on campus, Bobby notices he is being chased by thugs. Despite the danger, he manages to carry the poet into the reception before being caught by the thugs who want to take him to his father's house.
