Bobby Fine, played by Ryan O’Neal, is a professor at Chippenango State College who finds himself in a precarious position when the chairman of the English Department, Dr. Lincoln, portrayed by Fred Gwynne, informs him that he and Professor McCarthy, represented by David Rounds, are both vying for a singular tenured position. Meanwhile, in the bustling heart of New York City, Bobby’s father, Jack Fine, depicted by Jack Warden, faces dire straits as he attempts to salvage his clothing business, Fine Fashions, which is plummeting due to losing most of its accounts. Compounding the crisis, Jack is in over his head, owing a staggering $1.5 million to the intimidating loan shark known as Mr. Eddie, who is played menacingly by Richard Kiel. Towering and muscular, Mr. Eddie is not one to be trifled with, and when Jack can’t make the payment on a $250,000 loan, Eddie seizes control of the business, insisting that Bobby step in to sort things out.

As Bobby grapples with the chaos unfolding in his personal and professional life, he attends a reception at his college for a renowned poet, yet his attention is abruptly diverted when he realizes that a pair of thugs, employed by Mr. Eddie, are pursuing him.
