Hank Salka is a member of the East Side youth gang in New York who is drawn into the murkier world of crime when two gangsters, Mike and Butch Brocalli, hire him to stand watch during a bank robbery. The moment Hank tries to share some of the money with the East Side Kids, they suspend him from the club, and he is then taken into custody by Joe Reagan, the local policeman. What follows threads through loyalty, misjudgment, and the messy blur between right and wrong.

While the kids are out playing baseball in the street, a wayward arc of fate unfolds: a ball shatters the window of the criminals’ hideaway. Butch refuses to return the ball, so Danny Stevens gives chase. Joe recognizes the fleeing criminals, pursues them, and a fall to misfortune collapses a plan into a pair of arrests—Butch and Mike are caught, and Danny’s quick action earns him a $200 reward for “capturing the criminals.” The wind of opportunity seems to blow in Danny’s direction, and he quietly plans to buy baseball uniforms for his friends with the money. But the rest of the East Side Kids don’t see it that way. They misread his generosity as selfishness, take the money away, and ban him from the club in a cruel twist of mistaken judgment.

The plot thickens when Danny’s sister Ruth Stevens calls her boyfriend Joe, and Joe has the Kids arrested for thievery. The arrest weighs heavily on the boys, who feel the sting of betrayal from someone they call friends, and Danny maintains that he should be released. After the dust settles and they regain freedom, the Kids pool the money and buy an old car, turning a symbol of misused funds into a practical asset for the group. A month passes, and life in the neighborhood shifts as Hank, now a more dangerous fixture in the story, breaks out of jail with Butch and Mike and delivers a sharp warning to Muggs McGinnis and the rest of the East Side Kids about the looming threat to Danny.

The warning comes too late to save Danny from a brutal attack: he is found severely beaten in a warehouse left by the two gangsters. The gang, driven by fierce loyalty, taps into their resolve to save their friend and seeks out ace brain surgeon Ormsby to perform life-saving surgery. They arrive at Ormsby’s house with their battered jalopy as payment, pleading for a miracle. The surgeon, moved by their determination and the gravity of Danny’s condition, agrees to operate free of charge. The operation is a success, but Danny’s recovery remains uncertain, casting a pall over the victory.

In a crucial turn of truth, Joe reveals to the East Side Kids Danny’s real reasons for the $200—an honesty that shakes the group awake. The remorseful kids rally to Danny’s bedside, and, recognizing his genuine heart, urge him to return to the fold and begin healing. Ruth’s life takes another dangerous turn when she is briefly taken hostage at her apartment by Butch and Mike, yet the gang moves with stealth and courage to strike back. Hank plays a pivotal role in knocking Mike out, and as the criminal duo is finally arrested, Hank is released from his sentence, closing a chapter that began with a misstep and transformed into a hard-won lesson about loyalty and community.

The film crescendos with a touching reconciliation: the East Side Kids reunite in Danny’s hospital room, their spirits buoyed by the baseball uniforms they bought after selling the car. The uniforms symbolize not only a renewed camaraderie but also a hopeful future that stands in stark contrast to the earlier chaos. The story remains a tight, enduring portrait of friendship tested by misfortune, the cost of loyalty, and the quiet, stubborn resilience of a group of kids who refuse to abandon one of their own.
