High school student Courtney Bates begins experiencing terrifying dreams featuring the Driller Killer, a figure from her past. These nightmares plague her, causing her to question her reality and leading her to worry for the safety of those she loves.

Years earlier, Courtney's sister, Valerie, was attacked by the Driller Killer, leaving emotional scars on the entire family. This horrific incident haunts Courtney as she tries to cope with her fears, even creating a lie to protect her friends from Valerie's fate.

As Courtney approaches her 17th birthday, she develops a crush on her charming classmate, Matt Arbicost. Her feelings culminate in a passionate kiss after she invites him to watch her all-girl band rehearse, marking a significant moment in her teenage life.

Courtney and her friends decide to celebrate her birthday at a condo belonging to Sheila's father. The group arrives at the Desert Springs condominium, where they attempt to enjoy a fun getaway, despite an eerie feeling surrounding them.

In a bid to create a festive atmosphere, Courtney and her friends engage in lively activities, indulging in drinks and having a hilarious pillow fight. Their carefree moments are captured while they dream of musical fame, providing a brief escape from their underlying fears.
