Ending explained
How Sleepwalker (2026) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
In the last moments Sarah is behind the wheel, drifting into sleep as she drives. A branch—identical to the one that haunted her visions of Aimee’s death—rams into her chest, sealing the pattern she has been unable to escape. The wound completes the cycle: the mother finally meets the fate she has forever seen waiting for her daughter.
The film then rewinds to the night Aimee died. We see Sarah’s frantic attempt to chase after the car, the poisoned food she slipped to Michael, the crash that killed Aimee and left Michael comatose. This flash suggests that the crash that killed the child may also have been the moment Sarah herself died. Everything that follows—Michael’s lingering presence, the séance, the haunting art show, the recurring visions—can be read as the fleeting cascade of neural activity that a brain generates in its final minutes, a dying mind stitching together guilt, trauma, and supernatural symbols into a single, looping nightmare.
Thus the ending is intentionally ambiguous: it is unclear whether Sarah lived on after Aimee’s death or whether the entire story is the brain’s last reverie. What matters is that the film collapses the border between waking life and the somnambulant state, showing how crushing remorse can trap a person in a liminal loop that only resolves when the mind finally shuts down. The final image of the branch piercing Sarah’s chest is both a literal death and a metaphorical shattering of the fragile boundary between dream and reality.
