Set in a swamp, the film follows a mother (Mercedes McCambridge) and her children who visit a traveling carnival. The teenage daughter, played by Simone Griffeth, is drawn to an older male performer, while her brother becomes involved with an older female act. The story blends low‑budget 1970s exploitation thrills with a lurid, Southern Gothic atmosphere.
