Siren unfolds through the evolving perspectives of ten survivors, each forced to confront a catastrophe that defies ordinary explanation. Set in a secluded rural Japanese town in 2003, the narrative shuttles between different characters—students, a teacher, a professor, a priest, a celebrity, a hunter, and a pair of visiting outsiders—as they struggle to survive, uncover secrets, and piece together what happened in the three days following the disaster. The storytelling is deliberately non-chronological, inviting readers to connect clues across shifting timelines as the town’s fate starts to come into focus.

What begins as a straightforward earthquake quickly reveals a far stranger truth. The town becomes overrun by a terrifying violence exercised by beings called shibito—infected individuals whose cognitive function is deeply damaged, who bleed from the eyes, and who display a terrifying, brutal hostility toward the uninfected. They also possess a remarkable resilience, often recovering from injuries that would normally be fatal. Natural water sources and rainfall are replaced by a red, viscous liquid, turning the town into an isolated island ringed by an endless red sea. Disturbingly, sections of Hanuda repeatedly reshape themselves, with older, ruined versions of buildings reappearing to replace their modern successors.

Behind the mystery lies a closed, insular faith in a syncretic religion known as the Mana Religion. The faith blends Christian and Shinto elements, and its senior members—among them a nun—once attempted to call forth and appease a god named Datatsushi through ritual sacrifice. The ritual centers on a young girl chosen for her purported psychic gifts, who resists being killed. An outsider stumbling into the ceremony creates a momentary distraction that causes the rite to fail, setting off a cataclysm that shatters space and time and drags the town into another world where reality is warped.

The town’s eerie rhythm is punctuated by the Siren, a call associated with Datatsushi. This summons the infected, pulling them toward the red depths and driving them to build a nest capable of housing the deity’s corporeal form. Some of the transformed gain startling new traits, such as insect-like wings, and their mission becomes to kill remaining humans and convert them to the same fate. The survivors are left to navigate both the physical dangers of a collapsing town and the metaphysical tremors that blur past and present.

Across the three days, a handful of survivors manage to cling to hope, seeking a way to escape this distorted world. The tension builds as efforts to understand the disaster intersect with attempts to flee, revealing the town’s darkest histories and the motives hidden within its religious community. In the end, one survivor manages to break back into the real world, returning alone after a harrowing ordeal, while the fate of others remains entangled in the red sea, the warped townscape, and the lingering echo of the Datatsushi’s call.

The experience is less about action-driven heroism and more about atmosphere, mystery, and the slow unveiling of a town’s secrets. The interplay between faith, ritual, and the supernatural raises questions about belief, fate, and what it takes to sever the ties that bind a place to its terrifying past. Throughout, the narrative maintains a steady, eerie realism even as the environment becomes increasingly surreal, inviting readers to piece together the clues from multiple viewpoints and to inhabit the uneasy fear that saturates Hanuda.
