What Happens at the End of Silence?

How Silence (2020) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The conclusion of The Silence shifts the threat from natural predators to human depravity, before ultimately finding a sliver of hope in a frozen landscape. The climax begins when the Andrews family, having survived the initial Vesp outbreak, is targeted by a cult known as the Hushed. This group has adapted to the new world order by surgically removing their own tongues to ensure silence, but their leader, the Reverend, poses a sinister new danger. He fixates on Ally, not just for her survival skills, but because she is "fertile," revealing a twisted agenda to repopulate the world under his control.

When the family refuses to capitulate, the cult attacks their remote safe house using a child armed with blaring cellphones to summon the Vesps. Trapped and cornered in the basement with the cultists closing in, the family is saved by a heartbreaking sacrifice. Ally’s grandmother, Lynn, realizes their only weapon is sound; she screams to draw the Vesps directly to her position, allowing the creatures to devour her and the cult members while the rest of the family stays quiet and survives. Following this tragedy, the survivors decide to heed the advice to head north, knowing the Vesps are pterodactyl-like creatures that cannot survive in freezing temperatures.

The film’s final moments offer a glimpse into a resilient future. The family is shown living in the "Refuge," a northern territory where the cold keeps the monsters at bay. In a defining moment of adaptation, Ally and her boyfriend Rob are seen hunting the Vesps in the snow, turning the tables on the predators that once forced them into hiding. This ending underscores the movie's central theme of survival of the fittest, suggesting that Ally’s deafness, once a disability, became her greatest evolutionary advantage. While the source novel leaves the family's fate ambiguous, the film provides a definitive, hopeful conclusion: humanity can endure the apocalypse, provided they are willing to adapt to a silent, colder existence.
