In the climax, Tom Wilkin and Morton arrive at the hideout where Avraham Stern is being held. While Tom is helping a woman escape, Morton confronts Stern, and a gunshot rings out. Stern is found dead, but it’s unclear whether Morton executed him or if it was a mercy killing, and without witnesses, the truth remains ambiguous. This act marks a turning point, making Morton and Tom targets of the Jewish underground factions. As suspicion and danger escalate, Tom is eventually killed in the streets, shot down without defense, symbolizing the tragic cost of their involvement in the violent struggles for independence. Shoshana, witnessing all this, begins to question the violence needed to fulfill her father’s dream of a harmonious Israel. Her idealism is shattered, and she decides to join the Haganah’s effort to fight the British alongside Stern’s followers. The film closes with her accepting a future rooted in conflict and violence, an ending that suggests her belief in peace was perhaps naive. It is implied that Shoshana dies at 93 in Tel Aviv, indicating that her life was marked by the enduring struggles for her homeland. Her love with Tom didn’t survive the tumult of the period, and her hope for a peaceful Israel was ultimately sacrificed to the brutal reality of her time. Meanwhile, Morton, the more ruthless figure, likely sees his actions as justified, and his character’s morality is left ambiguous. The ending underscores the tragic sacrifices made by those caught in the violence of the fight for independence, and the impossible choice between love, ideology, and survival.
