Otone and Kensuke eventually leave the humanoid boy Kakeru in the forest. The artificial child was commissioned in the likeness of the son they lost, but living with him has made clear that resemblance cannot turn a different being into the dead child or repair the parents' grief on command. They return to the city without the machine, and the image that carries their son forward is instead two trees. The choice is not a cheerful rejection of technology or a conventional family reunion; it is an acknowledgment that Kakeru has his own nature and that their memory of the child cannot be permanently housed in a replacement body.
Kore-eda frames the conclusion around imagination's invisible but persistent work. The parents do not stop loving their son when they release the humanoid, nor do they resolve bereavement by recovering the past. They learn to live with an image that can accompany them without demanding that another entity perform it. The two trees make that compromise tangible: memory remains rooted and capable of growth, yet it does not erase absence. Leaving Kakeru in the forest also preserves the emotional distance between human beings and the artificial life they created, allowing the film to end with ambiguity about both forms of attachment rather than declaring either one false.
