Four teenage girlfriends chase a few days of freedom in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, during a 1963 summer that feels full of possibility. The town buzzes with a big festival that promises a lively dance contest, rowdy beer blasts, and a steady stream of eligible, sun-kissed boys. The group — Carson McBride Bridget Fonda, Melaina Buller Phoebe Cates, Luanne Clatterbuck Annabeth Gish, and Caroline Carmichael, nicknamed “Pudge” Page Hannah — are from different corners of the middle-class world: Carson is engaged to Harley, the dull son of a wealthy businessman; Melaina is a restless preacher’s daughter; Luanne is the daughter of a conservative senator; and Pudge is self-conscious about her weight. They hole up at Luanne’s parents’ vacation home to stretch their legs beyond rules and expectations for a long, sunlit weekend.
Their nights are a blend of impulse and risk. At a club, Melaina’s daring move to hook up with a guy in his car ends with a humiliating assault by two local girls who attack her after she had taunted them about entering a beauty contest. The rumor mill swirls as the friends navigate crushes, flirtations, and the pull of independence. Carson and Pudge spend time with Buzz and Chip, while Luanne tries to dodge another boy who won’t leave her alone. At the car-hop, Buzz flirts with Carson, ignoring her engagement and the life she’s supposed to lead, while Pudge offers to teach Chip the shag, and he grudgingly agrees.
Back at their Myrtle Beach home base, Carson makes a half-hearted call to Harley, signaling she’s in the city but not admitting she’s out with another guy. A night arrives when Chip shows up before Pudge is ready, but she’s happy to be teaching him and they begin their dance lessons together. Buzz later drags Carson into a fishing expedition with a fly lure, pressing her to go along; she resists any real chance of a future with him, insisting nothing will happen, and he accepts it, proposing they stay friends.
Melaina is determined to rehearse a beauty-queen routine, yet Luanne interrupts and convinces her to recite lines from Gone with the Wind instead, a moment that foreshadows how they each bargain with their identities for the sake of the weekend. The fishing becomes a metaphor as Carson and Buzz grow closer, while Chip and Pudge ask each other pointed questions about sex and relationships. Buzz doubts Carson will marry Harley, pushing her to confront the rules she’s built around love and loyalty.
The beauty contest night arrives with tension and spectacle. Melaina doesn’t fit the expected mold and ends up performing a bikini-danced number after losing to Suette because Luanne encouraged a more modest appearance. Harley arrives at the pageant, forcing Carson to hide, while Luanne searches for him. Melaina ingenious enough to leverage the moment: she nudges Luanne to mention her senator father’s name to invite Jimmy Valentine to the house for a private party, which spirals out of control.
Melaina spends the evening dancing with Jimmy and making an impression, while Carson spends more time with Buzz. Luanne and Harley grow closer, and Chip tries to pin down Pudge, only to have her reject his declaration that their bond can be more than friendship. When the morning comes, Jimmy is still drunk and his manager has shown up to collect him. The moment reveals the truth behind the “celebrity maker”—the manager isn’t an obstacle but the gateway Melaina needed, and she shifts her focus toward him.
With the sense that the weekend might end in a major turning point, Luanne and Harley, joined by Buzz and Carson (who had sneaked back from the yacht), chase Pudge and Melaina to the pavilion to watch Pudge and Chip perform their dance in the shag contest. The sight of Luanne’s parents triggers honesty: Luanne vows to tell the truth, and Carson urges Harley to face the reality that she may love Buzz more than him. In a charged confession, Carson reveals she cannot marry Harley because her heart belongs to Buzz, and Luanne finally admits that she and Harley had sex on the yacht.
In the aftermath, Harley’s anger boils over into a crash of nerves as he shatters a mirror during a confrontation, while Luanne consoles him and signals a tentative new beginning for them. Chip and Pudge win the contest and commit to staying in touch as he heads to Annapolis. Melaina secures representation with the agent who sees genuine potential in her, and the future feels brighter for her ambition. Luanne ends up with Harley, while Carson discovers that happiness can exist outside the ritual of marriage, having found a sense of self and companionship with Buzz.
The weekend closes on a note of growth and redefined expectations. The four friends return from Myrtle Beach with more clarity about who they are and what they want from life and love, having navigated flirtation, jealousy, ambition, and honesty under the bright lights of a summer that promised risk and delivered a rough, unforgettable freedom.
