Upon reaching a warehouse with a distinctive crimson door, Thomas realizes Andy will not accompany him further. After an emotional farewell, Thomas enters the warehouse alone, following the eerie silence guided by arrows. Inside, he meets two figures who invite him to sit. They hand him a red book inscribed with the word “participant,” informing him about a reality show on the Dark Web where he must survive for 30 days without dying to win a colossal $1 million prize.

The stakes are immense; his every action will be captured by hidden cameras, with relentless hunters stalking him, driven to eliminate him. Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope in the knowledge that he can remain safe if he stays connected to someone else. This prospect ignites a newfound tenacity in Thomas, fueling his resolve.

Thomas’s attempt to confide in his family about his bizarre situation is met with disbelief. His brother-in-law, affectionately called “The Sams,” dismisses his claims as a cry for attention stemming from heartbreak. Undeterred, he turns to Craigslist to find others who might understand his predicament, but the isolation deepens as his family chooses to leave him behind.

As paranoia and suspicion grow within Thomas, thoughts of unseen dangers seep into his daily routine. He discovers a tiny camera in his house, prompting him to share his fears with his mother—a nurse—who brushes off his concerns as fabrications of an overactive imagination. Growing frustrated, he seeks medical assistance but is once again dismissed.

In a bid for companionship, Thomas persuades his brother-in-law to stay overnight. Their fragile relationship is tested by strange occurrences, leaving Thomas to confront the unknown alone. In his isolation, he unexpectedly finds an ally in a homeless man named James, who agrees to stick by him at all times.

The following day, his family reacts negatively to James’ presence, insisting he must be evicted due to their household agreement. Undaunted, Thomas reminds them, “As long as I have a job, I can stay in the house.” However, his situation continues to deteriorate. He and James form an unlikely bond over the next few days, but after being fired from his job, the arrangement leads to his eviction.

One evening at a club with his sister, Thomas receives an intriguing message through Craigslist that mirrors his current situation. He decides to abandon his sister and meet Maddy (Anna Kendrick) the next day at 10:30, with a promise to wear a banana jacket.

The following day, he arrives at the meetup only to find that Maddy is not donning her signature banana jacket, but instead a yellow shirt. After verifying her identity through her mother, they remain skeptical but agree to test the waters by teaming up for a day.

At Maddy’s place, Thomas senses an ominous feeling, leading him to discover yet another hidden camera. As they delve into each other’s lives, Maddy proposes confronting Thomas’s ex, Theresa, to gain clarity about his past. Their candid conversation unveils insights into why their relationship faltered: Theresa desired escape from monotony. This conversation challenges Thomas to reconsider his stagnant lifestyle.

As the clock ticks down on their 30 days, Thomas and Maddy continue to deepen their connection, sharing secrets, fears, and experiences. Just when they’ve found solace in each other, the looming threat of the production team and the hunters become increasingly real. Maddy is warned that they must remain cautious as they dodge the prying eyes of production assistants and suspicious motel staff.

However, Maddy’s emotional struggles eventually lead her to reconsider her choices, pushing her away from Thomas, who desperately tries to hold onto his newfound love and sanity.
