Set in Oregon in 1862, Martha and Jed Richards endure the loss of their two daughters, who die of cholera on their journey west. Martha is emotionally shattered, unable to move on. When orphan Danny arrives, Jed adopts him as his son, while Martha initially cannot love him. Over time she gradually heals and embraces Danny as part of the family.
