During the German retreat in WWII, the forces carried out a scorched‑earth policy in Finnmark and Nord‑Troms, razing villages, schools and hospitals and forcing about 60,000 residents into mountain hideouts. When liberation came, the survivors who had lived in caves and huts emerged with determination to rebuild their homes and restore the area.
