Ending explained
How School Spirits (2017) ends, in short: the final scene, the last twist and what it means for the characters. The full ending explained, with every spoiler, lives on its own page.
The Season 1 finale of School Spirits delivers a shocking twist that fundamentally recontextualizes the series' central mystery. Throughout the season, the audience is led to believe that Maddie Nears is a ghost solving her own murder, but the ending reveals a far more sinister fate: Maddie isn't actually dead. Instead, her consciousness was displaced from her body by a vengeful spirit named Janet. This distinction is crucial, as it means Maddie is not a ghost in the traditional sense but a trapped soul, leaving a small window open for her to eventually return to the land of the living—a possibility that seemed impossible at the start of the series.
The immediate aftermath of this revelation creates a high-stakes cliffhanger. While Maddie’s spirit remains tethered to the school's purgatory, her physical body—now controlled by Janet—boards a bus and flees to an unknown destination. This physical separation creates a desperate scenario where Maddie is trapped in the afterlife while her identity is hijacked in the living world. To make matters worse, her only line of communication with the living, her friend Simon, has been severed; convinced he is losing his mind, Simon pulls away, leaving Maddie isolated at the very moment she needs help the most. The ending shifts the genre from a standard "whodunnit" to a race against time to retrieve a stolen life.
However, the ending emphasizes that even if Maddie regains her body, a happy ending is far from guaranteed. While Janet occupied Maddie's body, she went on a chaotic spree that included breaking into homes and committing a hit-and-run on Maddie's ex-boyfriend, Xavier. This creates a tragic irony for the future of the show; if Maddie manages to expel Janet and return to her life, she will immediately face legal and social consequences for crimes she did not commit. The finale thus sets up a complex future where survival is only the first step, and true justice requires clearing her name against the backdrop of the havoc wreaked by her possessor.
