After an orphanage fire, a train carries children west to Manitoba. At a stop in Scourie, Ontario, little Patsy meets childless Victoria and Patrick McChesney, who decide to adopt her. Because she is baptized Catholic, the Protestant couple agree to raise her in that faith. A jealous fellow orphan spreads rumors that Patsy started the fire.
