Uma, a mute Brahmin orphan, remains under the roof of her uncle’s family. Because her horoscope is deemed inauspicious, predicting widowhood, the family deems her unsuitable for a human marriage. To circumvent the social taboo, they perform a ceremonial marriage to a tree, following the period’s custom.
