Daniel Eugene 'Rudy' Ruettiger grows up in Joliet, Illinois, with a dream of playing football at Notre Dame. This aspiration is fueled by his father's support and love for the team, despite Rudy's physical and academic challenges.

While working at a local steel mill, Rudy experiences a tragic event when his best friend Pete dies in an explosion. This loss rekindles Rudy's determination to pursue his goal of playing football at Notre Dame.

Rudy travels to South Bend, Indiana, eager to enroll at Notre Dame but faces rejection from the admissions office. Undeterred, he seeks alternatives to fulfill his dream of attending this prestigious university.

With the help of a local priest, Rudy gains admission to Holy Cross College, a junior college nearby. This opportunity serves as a stepping stone for him to improve his grades and eventually transfer to Notre Dame.

Eager to immerse himself in the Notre Dame football culture, Rudy volunteers with the stadium groundskeeper, Fortune. He goes to great lengths, even sneaking into the office to sleep, demonstrating his commitment to his dream.

Rudy befriends D-Bob, a graduate student who becomes his tutor. During their time together, D-Bob uncovers Rudy's dyslexia, and with new learning strategies, Rudy begins to see significant improvements in his academics.

As Christmas arrives, Rudy returns home to visit his family. Although they acknowledge his academic progress, they ridicule his football aspirations, and Rudy faces the emotional blow of losing his fiancée to his brother.

In a major turning point, Rudy receives the long-awaited news that he has been accepted to Notre Dame during his last eligible transfer semester. The joyous announcement is made over the mill's loudspeaker, celebrating his achievement.

Upon joining Notre Dame, Rudy works tirelessly, earning the chance to practice with the football team. His relentless motivation catches the attention of Coach Ara Parseghian and the scholarship players, who start to see him as a threat.

After the 1974 season, Coach Ara Parseghian leaves, and new coach Dan Devine refuses to let Rudy dress for games. Feeling excluded and disheartened, Rudy makes the decision to quit the team, struggling with disappointment.

Fortune, Rudy's mentor, recognizes his internal struggle and reminds him that the only validation he needs is from himself. This pivotal conversation reignites Rudy's spirit, motivating him to rejoin the team despite the risks.

In an act of solidarity, team captain Roland Steele and other seniors stand up for Rudy and protest, insisting he be allowed to dress for the final game. Their commitment to Rudy highlights the camaraderie among teammates.

As Notre Dame faces Georgia Tech, Rudy's moment arrives. Although initially sidelined, shouts from the crowd urging 'Rudy!' lead the team to override Coach Devine’s decisions, finally giving him a chance to play.

In a climactic moment, Rudy steps onto the field for the last play of the game. He successfully sacks the Georgia Tech quarterback, culminating in a powerful celebration from his teammates who hoist him in triumph.
