Roberte, a 40‑year‑old former resistance fighter, is a Calvinist, anticlerical deputy in the chamber and inspector of censorship. She is married to Octave, an elderly Catholic aesthete and professor of canon law, whom she rescued from a wartime collaboration trial. Octave compels her to fulfill a perverse marital custom, treating her as a hospitality‑oriented prostitute for his benefit.
