Ritual (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

In the film’s climax the battle that has raged for days finally turns on Father Steiger himself. After Father Theophilius Riesinger is overwhelmed by the unseen force that drives Emma’s convulsions, the younger priest—still haunted by his brother’s death and his own doubts—steps forward. He ties the medallion of Saint Michael, a relic he had taken from his brother’s belongings, around his neck and begins the rite that Riesinger could not complete.

As Steiger chants, the room trembles and Emma’s screams grow louder, but the priest’s conviction does not waver. The demonic presence that has been clawing at the sisters and shaking the convent is forced back, and Emma collapses, freed from the invisible grip that had held her for weeks. The oppressive darkness that lingered in the corridors lifts, leaving the convent quiet and the afflicted girl still.
