Sydney Miller, Camilla Belle, is a 13-year-old girl born in Hawaii who moved away after her mother’s death, a memory she barely holds. From her great-aunt, she inherits Makai, a derelict plantation that has belonged to five generations. The Millers—Ben Miller, [Dwier Brown], and Elizabeth Miller, [Lauren Sinclair]—leave their Chicago home to visit Makai. They are greeted by attorney Bo Kauihou, [Keone Young], who explains that Sydney will inherit the property if she stays there for two weeks and hints that there have already been inquiries about buying the land. Bo hopes to preserve Makai, even as Ben and Elizabeth wonder whether they should sell, given their lack of farming experience and the pressure from developers.

On the plantation, Sydney uncovers an old photograph of her mother and learns that she used to surf. The next day, she discovers a surfboard with the name “Naniloa” inscribed on it in a nearby abandoned barn and befriends Gia, [Stacie Hess], a girl who loves surfing. Gia introduces Sydney to her circle of friends, including Kona, [Brian Stark], an artist and skateboarder. Although Sydney admits she doesn’t know how to surf, Gia teaches her the basics and the two begin to bond over the sport.

Meanwhile, Bo and the Millers meet with realtors who discuss plans for a resort on Makai. The developers suggest that the main plantation house could be converted into a restaurant, and they imply that access to the nearby beach might be reserved for hotel guests. This prospect disappoints Sydney, who hopes the property, and its historic buildings from 1912, will be preserved rather than repurposed.

During a surfing session, Sydney is knocked off her board and Kona rescues her, leaving her with a facial cut. She wakes up in a beach house owned by Gia’s mother, Malia, [Jeanne Mori], who reveals that the Naniloa board belonged to Sydney’s mother and that she and Sydney’s mom were friends. Malia is surprised that Ben never mentioned this friendship. She also leads Sydney to a lagoon, showing her whales gathering there each year, and Reintroduces a sense of Hawaii’s living history. Ben grows upset, believing Malia encouraged Sydney to surf, while Malia questions his decision to shield Sydney from her mother’s past. He explains that his protection was meant to shield Sydney from Hawaii and surfing, a view Malia challenges.

The next day, Gia shares the truth Sydney hadn’t fully faced: her mother died in an accident while surfing. Sydney realizes her father has never talked about her mother, and she begins to seek answers. Together with Gia’s help, she visits Kaala Loa, a vacant plantation where she discovers her mother’s old bedroom. At the same time, Makai receives a new monetary offer, forcing Sydney to confront whether to sell.

That night, a party is held at Kaala Loa, where Sydney and Kona share a kiss as they gaze at the whales. Malia tells Sydney that her mother died while surfing, adding another layer to the family’s history. A newspaper article then reveals that Makai and the beach will be sold to the company, and Gia’s friends begin to distance themselves from Sydney. Gia admits she initially befriended Sydney to influence her, though she insists their friendship is genuine, a claim Sydney questions.

As pressure mounts, Sydney initially contemplates selling Makai. But the moment she is about to sign the papers, she spots Gia’s friends gathered outside and decides not to sell, choosing instead to remain on Makai. She heads back to the beach to share the news with Gia, only to find Gia’s surfboard drifting in the tide. Sydney rescues Gia from the waves and, back on land, tells her that Makai will not be sold. The two rekindle their friendship, and Sydney chooses to stay connected to Makai and its memory, reaffirming the bond between family, history, and a place she now chooses to call home.
