Remember Sunday

Gus [Zachary Levi] wakes every morning at 6 to the sound of real New Orleans jazz spilling from his clock-radio, as if the city itself has become a morning companion. A cheerful pair of hosts on the radio greet him with energy, and a folder waiting beside a note reminds him that he lives in New Orleans and that there is a large message he must read each day. He then heads out for a jog, where a roaming fiddle player seems to know exactly when he is on time or running late, a detail that is never explained but feels almost magical in its mystery.

Gus works in a jewelry store owned by Sam [Jerry Adler] and his wife, who used to live next door to him when he was younger. His memory is the most striking thing about him: he can recall nearly every detail from life before a terrible day in 2009, and he can perform every skill he once possessed. Yet for anything more recent, he must lean on a web of reminders—post-it notes, organized files, and a computer program that converts his spoken notes into words on the screen. This system keeps him on track, but it also highlights how fragile his daily routine has become.

Once an accomplished astronomer who collaborated with Lauren [Larisa Oleynik] and others at the Mount Wilson Observatory in California, Gus’s work could be likened to a scientific mission on the scale of Einstein’s genius. An aneurysm damaged his hippocampus, so every time he sleeps, he forgets what he learned the day before. To stay connected to his life, he returns to familiar surroundings and leans on his sister Lucy [Merritt Wever], who is close by and always ready to offer help. There may be a cure someday, but for now the future remains uncertain.

In New Orleans, Gus also relies on a close network: his best friend since childhood, a lawyer named Jerry [David Hoffman], who must constantly remind Gus that he and his wife have split up; and Bernadette [Dana Gourrier], who lives upstairs and takes a deep interest in his wellbeing, even warning her son Max not to swindle Gus, a man who clearly does not owe anyone money.

Molly [Alexis Bledel] is in college and burdened by debt until an inheritance issue is resolved. She works as a waitress at a restaurant run by Baptiste [Barry Shabaka Henley], and she shares an apartment with Jolene [Valerie Azlynn], the prettier of the two roommates who also keeps a vigilant eye on Gus. Molly dreams of owning a flower shop someday, a goal that gives her life its own gentle brightness.

The two meet and something sparks between them, a budding connection that feels real and hopeful. Molly sells Gus a ring that belonged to a relative, while she had hoped to sell a watch instead, though Gus instantly recognizes it as a fake. He feels a pull toward Molly and longs to date her, yet he cannot escape his own self-imposed caution. He relies on reminders to navigate his budding feelings, while Molly likes him in return. Jolene, watching closely, grows suspicious of Gus’s behavior, especially because, without his memory, he sometimes mistakes Jolene for Molly. Jolene also accuses too many women in Gus’s life, a tension that adds friction to an already delicate situation.

As the days unfold, the question looms: will their connection endure in the face of memory loss and truth-telling? What will happen when Molly learns the full truth about Gus and his struggle to remember who he is and what he wants? The story lingers on these questions, inviting us to consider how memory shapes love, trust, and the possibility of a future together.
