The society is split between two hereditary castes. The ruling Long Ears, distinguished by elaborate ear plugs and tattoos, occupy positions of authority, while the Short Ears, bearing no such markings, shoulder the labor that sustains the island’s rituals. This division creates a simmering tension beneath the ceremonial pageantry, as each group strives to assert its worth within a fragile ecosystem that offers little room for error. At the center of this volatile dance stands a seasoned monarch, Ariki‑mau, whose decades‑long reign is guided by whispered prophecies, and his ambitious counsellor, Tupa, who believes that grander monuments will appease the gods. The narrative follows Noro, a Long Ear cast out by circumstance, and Ramana, a Short Ear whose own exile marks her as an outsider. Their unexpected partnership blossoms into a forbidden romance, set against the looming competition with the charismatic chief Make, whose own aspirations threaten to reshape the island’s hierarchy.
