In the 1890s Father Adolf Daens arrives in Aalst, a textile town plagued by child labor, low wages and disenfranchisement while the Catholic Church backs the elite. He writes bold columns in a Catholic paper, rallying workers. Expelled, he forms a party, wins a seat and must choose priesthood or labor activism. A young woman loves a socialist.
