The film adapts Atticus Lish's novel about Zou Lei, an undocumented Uyghur immigrant surviving precarious work in Queens, and Brad Skinner, an Iraq veteran carrying trauma into civilian life. Their difficult intimacy develops amid cash jobs, crowded rooms, police vulnerability, and Brad's worsening instability rather than outside those pressures. A screen version necessarily narrows the novel's dense walks through New York, bodily labor, and shifting internal viewpoints, but the central relationship and the social machinery closing around it come directly from Lish's book.
