A preacher named Tod struggles to reconcile his faith with his desire for freedom, leading a double life as a skateboarding enthusiast. By day, he fulfills the expectations of his congregation, but he yearns for a life beyond the church. Inspired by films like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Tod's perspective shifts when he begins offering unconventional advice during confessions, drawing both support and criticism, and ultimately forcing him to confront his conflicting desires and the expectations of those around him.

What Happens at the End of Preacher?

How Preacher (2016) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

The series finale of Preacher brings four seasons of chaotic, blasphemous adventure to a surprisingly grounded conclusion, wrapping up the fates of Jesse, Tulip, Cassidy, and a host of celestial troublemakers. The episode begins with the apocalypse mere minutes away, forcing the trio into a frantic race to stop The Grail from launching a nuclear holocaust. While multiple battles erupt simultaneously—including a divine smackdown between Jesus and Hitler—Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy manage to avert the end of the world. Humperdoo, the intended messiah whose televised tap-dance was meant to trigger the destruction, is unceremoniously killed, leaving God without a puppet to enact his grand plan. With the immediate threat neutralized, the story jumps forward, revealing a future where the characters find a sense of peace that had long eluded them.

Jesse’s journey culminates in the confrontation he has sought since the beginning: a sit-down with God. After two years of living a quiet life with Tulip and their daughter, Jesse finally faces his creator. He learns that God’s grand design was simply to be loved, but in a defining moment of character growth, Jesse refuses to give God the satisfaction. He uses the power of Genesis to command the Almighty and walks away, rejecting the divine need for validation. This rejection leads to a final, decisive justice: The Saint of Killers, having been granted passage to Heaven by Jesse, waits for God’s return. In a moment deeply satisfying for the narrative, the Saint kills God, ending the cycle of divine cruelty that drove the series. The finale closes with a poignant flash-forward forty years into the future. We see that Jesse and Tulip lived full lives together, while Cassidy, who had avoided the sun for centuries, chooses to die on his own terms. Stepping into the sunlight, the vampire burns away, finally achieving the peace he could never find in immortality.
