Dave the Dude buys apples from Apple Annie and clings to them as his luck charm. Annie insists the latest apple is especially lucky, reinforcing Dave's superstition. The belief foreshadows how chance will shape his business and relationships.

Dave encounters Elizabeth 'Queenie' Martin, daughter of a friend and a speakeasy owner. Queenie offers to contribute $5 a week toward the $20,000 he is owed, but Dave decides to bankroll her dream instead. He resolves to make Queenie a nightclub star, much to Joy Boy's astonishment.
