Bus, a shopgirl, meets Wally Dennis at the department store where she works. He is immediately captivated by her beauty and poise and begins pursuing her.

Wally follows Bus to a summer camp she attends with her friend Georgine. Despite Bus's resolve never to marry, he wins her over and they marry.

After the wedding, Bus learns that Wally is a gambler with no steady job who moves from flush to broke. She fears the insecurity of their lifestyle and tries to keep their family together.

Bus becomes pregnant and Wally vows to reform, taking a mechanic job. He promises to provide stability, but tensions over money persist.

Bus discovers Wally took 90 dollars from their joint account and suspects he bet it on a horse. She tells him to leave, packing his bags, and later learns he spent the money on a fancy baby carriage as a surprise.

Wally's gambling friends reveal he is in New Orleans with no forwarding address, leaving Bus to fend for herself.

Bus returns to the department store job, hides her worsening situation, and moves to a cheaper apartment. She begins gambling on horses to pay the rent, selecting a longshot named Baby Mine.

Her gambling leads to trouble: Baby Mine wins, but Martie pockets Bus's winnings and reveals that he bet on another horse instead of her longshot.

Georgine, now married to Finkelwald, offers what help she can, but Bus's due date is near and she cannot afford the 500 dollars for a hospital.

Wally returns from New Orleans and fights Martie in the betting parlor, drawing police attention. The officer in charge arranges for Bus and Wally to be taken to the hospital as Bus is about to give birth.

In the hospital, Bus gives birth to a healthy daughter despite fears that something could go wrong. Wally jokes about their next child, but Bus gives him a dirty look and corrects him when he is overly confident.

The scene closes on Bus and Wally with their newborn daughter, acknowledging the fragile finances of their life together. Wally's quip about a boy next is met with a sharp rebuke from Bus, signaling a wary, but hopeful, future.
