Made in wartime and edited by candlelight, Vartanov’s seldom‑seen documentary chronicles his friendship with genius filmmaker Sergei Parajanov, imprisoned by the KGB at the height of his fame. It revives forbidden footage from Vartanov’s 1969 film The Color of Armenian Land, where Parajanov creates his masterpiece The Color of Pomegranates, reveals a shocking request in unpublished 1974 prison letters, and records Parajanov’s final day on the unfinished Confession, now part of The Last Spring. Critics hail Vartanov’s wordless montage for capturing Parajanov’s soul, praised by Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola and other cinema masters.
