Following the explosion of a British military van, Captain Wingate leads a punitive raid on the village of Al Basma, not to capture specific rebels, but to break the spirit of the populace. The destruction is total: homes are dynamited with elders still inside, livestock is looted, and the village's cotton fields are set ablaze. In a moment of profound cruelty, Wingate deceives the village men into boarding a bus for detention, only to trigger a landmine that kills them all instantly.
