Pedro da Maia defies his father's wishes and marries Maria Monforte; they have a son, Carlos, and a daughter. Years later Maria abandons Pedro for Tancredo, fleeing to Italy with their daughter. Grief drives Pedro to suicide. Carlos is raised by his grandfather, becomes a doctor, and falls for the beautiful Maria Eduarda.
