From a boyhood tutelage under Harry Houdini in the 1920s, Welles maintained a lifelong fascination with magic. In the unfinished television special he filmed over nearly a decade (1976‑1985), he presents a series of tricks directly to the camera, repeatedly emphasizing that no trick photography is employed, offering a rare glimpse of the legendary filmmaker as a performer.
