George Shuttleworth, a chimney sweep from Wigan, dreams of winning the Isle of Man TT and craves a factory ride with Rainbow Motorcycle Company. When rejected, he decides to enter his own machine, the Shuttleworth Snap, hoping to prove himself on the road.

During a test run, George knocks the Shuttleworth Snap off its stand and crashes into his neighbor Mr Hardacre's fence, drawing jeers about his unfulfilled TT dream. The mishap underscores the difficulty of his goal and sets up his stubborn determination.

Desperate for funds, he asks his mother for £5 to travel to the Isle of Man. She cannot give it directly, so she tries to borrow the money from his grandpa's savings concealed in the lining of the settee.

With the money secured, George travels by train to Liverpool and boards the steamer bound for Douglas on the Isle of Man.

Onboard the steamer, George spots TT stars like Bert Tyldesley and Rainbow's secretary Florrie Dibney. He attempts to join a group photograph with Tyldesley and Norton, hoping to gain recognition.

To save Florrie from a stray cargo crate, George pushes her aside, but her hat is knocked overboard in the process.

Florrie admonishes him, and George volunteers to descend the ship's side along a rope to retrieve the hat. As he begins the descent, the deckhands haul in the rope and he ends up plunging into the water.

Despite the earlier mishap, George reaches the race start with seconds to spare. He must contend with rivals who have paid not to compete, and he pushes forward despite the obstacles.

George rides with ferocious speed as most of his rivals crash or suffer blown engines. With only yards to go, his bike conks out, and he pushes it across the finish line to win by a narrow margin.

In winning the race, George also ends up with Florrie, fulfilling his dream and beginning a possible romance with her.
