The climactic heist finds Mary, now known as Machine Gun Mary, forced by Sean to join one last bank robbery. As the crew bursts out with the loot, police have already surrounded the building. A chaotic gunfight erupts; men fall, and a figure in a trench coat is seen taking a bullet. The camera lingers on what appears to be Mary collapsing, leading the audience to expect the title’s grim prophecy to be fulfilled.

When the officers reach the fallen body, it is revealed to be Sean, who had swapped his own clothes for Mary’s disguise, assuming that “no one would dare shoot a woman.” The ruse collapses the moment a police bullet hits him, showing that her gender offered him no protection. Mary herself never entered the bank’s exit corridor; she survived the whole affair untouched.

The film’s final moments shift to a quiet funeral service. A police detective, still impressed by the operation’s audacity, offers Mary a commendation for “getting away smartly.” She replies that nothing she did was clever—she simply survived. With her head held high, she walks away from the crime world, the money and autonomy she earned now a means to rebuild a life for herself and her son. The ending leaves us with the sense that, rather than being a victim, Mary turned the very expectations of her gender against those who tried to exploit it, emerging alive and in control.
