Nightwatch (2022) Ending Explained – Final Scene & Meaning

The film closes the long‑standing nightmare that began thirty years earlier by finally pulling the strings of trauma tight and then snapping them. Martin, now a grizzled father haunted by PTSD, has spent the whole film trying to shield his daughter Emma from the horrors of his past. Emma, desperate for answers about the night her mother Kalinka took her own life, takes the night‑watch job at the same morgue and sneaks into St. Hans Psychiatric Hospital to confront Detective Superintendent Peter Wormer, the man who once stalked their family.

Emma’s plan—to film Wormer’s frail, blind form and show it to her father—backfires. Instead of easing Martin’s fear, the vision of Wormer aware of his daughter fuels his paranoia. The real danger, however, is revealed to be Gunver, the hospital psychiatrist who has been manipulating everyone from the shadows. She had planted the idea that Wormer might have a son, steered Emma’s investigation, and used Martin’s PTSD as a pretext to drug him and keep him immobilised.

Meanwhile, Bent, a disturbed patient under Wormer’s influence, breaks out of the facility and kidnaps the woman who was standing in for Emma. In a tense exchange, Bent discovers he has taken the wrong person; the woman overpowers him and strangles him with the very chain that had restrained her. The death of Bent clears the way for the final confrontation.

Jens, Martin’s old friend who saved them in the original film, returns briefly only to be murdered by a copy‑cat killer, confirming that the cycle of violence is still alive. His death pushes Martin over the edge, but also galvanises him for the final showdown.

When Gunver finally confronts Martin in the morgue, she drugs his tea and attempts to paralyse him permanently. As the situation spirals, Martin—still blinded by the sedative—mirrors his old reliance on darkness to fight. He manages to regain enough control to turn Wormer’s own knife against him, stabbing Wormer in the head and ending the original menace that had haunted his family for decades.

Emma, having obtained Kramer’s gun during the chaos, turns it on Gunver. She shoots Gunver dead, removing the hidden mastermind who had orchestrated the recent murders and manipulated Martin’s trauma for her own revenge.

The film ends with Martin, Emma, and their friends relaxing on a beach, a stark contrast to the oppressive yellow‑lit morgue that dominated their lives. Martin finally appears at peace, no longer a prisoner of his past, and Emma looks liberated from the burden of fixing a father who could not face his own demons. The closure suggests that, with the true killers gone, the family can now move forward—free at last from the darkness that once defined them.
