Set in the years before World War I, the film follows a young boy attending a primary school in a Polish region under Austrian rule. As he matures, he returns to the same school as a rebellious, poetic‑minded teenager amid a growing national liberation movement. The story portrays a country where church and state cooperate to stifle the human spirit.
