My Brother, My Sister (2021) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

The ending of My Brother, My Sister ties together the emotional and psychological struggles of the family, showing a hopeful conclusion despite years of pain and misunderstandings. Throughout the film, the siblings Tesla and Nik rebuild their relationship, mainly fueled by the truth uncovered in a revealing letter from their father, Giulio. This letter reveals that the man Nik saw with Giulio’s mistress—Giada—was actually Giulio himself, and not someone Nikola had mistaken for his father. This confession helps Tesla understand that Nik’s departure was motivated by a desire to protect his family from the scandal involving their father, rather than abandonment. With this newfound understanding, Tesla forgives her brother and they come closer after years of resentment.

As the family continues to grapple with their individual issues, Sebastiano, who has schizophrenia and believes he’s on a journey to Mars, begins to find a path to recovery through the presence of Nik and their shared efforts. Though his fears and mental health challenges lead to a tragic accident during an important concert, this moment ultimately becomes a turning point. In the hospital, Sebastiano makes peace with his family and expresses a desire to start anew, and he even faces his fear of water by walking into the sea, symbolizing hope for overcoming his illness.
