Joe Merrill, the son of a millionaire who owns a nationwide chain of five‑and‑ten‑cent stores, assumes the alias Joe Grant and takes a stockroom job at one of his father’s outlets to prove he can succeed on his own. While working there he falls for fellow stockroom clerk Maggie Johnson, sparking a romance that upsets his mother, who has already arranged a high‑society match with Millicet Rogers.
