How Murder at Yellowstone City (2022) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.
At the end of Murder at Yellowstone City, the truth about the murders is finally uncovered. It’s revealed that the real killer is Jimmy Ambrose Jr., the sheriff’s son, who carried out the murders under the influence and instruction of his mother, Emma Dunnigan. Emma and Jimmy were working together—Emma, driven by greed, wanted her late husband's gold and convinced Jimmy to kill Robert Dunnigan so she could escape town with the riches. Jimmy’s initial murders were deliberate, but they escalated after Violet discovered a love letter revealing Emma’s involvement. Fearing exposure, Jimmy also murdered Violet and Isabel, who had connections to Robert or may have known the truth.
The climax sees the townspeople confronting the truth as Jimmy and Emma’s plot unravels. In the final shootout, many characters are killed, including Jimmy, who dies from his injuries, and Emma, who is shot by Alice while trying to escape. The sheriff, Jim Ambrose, is also wounded but survives, and the town is forever changed by these tragic events. As the dust settles, Cicero—who was wrongly accused earlier—finds a sense of renewed hope outside the town, still searching for true freedom and acceptance. The ending leaves viewers with the message that appearances can deceive and that complex motivations often lie beneath the surface of even the most straightforward Western tales, reminding us that people are rarely simply good or evil.
