As Russia’s war transforms Pavel Talankin’s school, the cheerful institution he once filmed empties out and its rituals harden into military propaganda. Pupils, friends, and relatives are drawn toward conscription, while Talankin quietly preserves footage that contradicts the official performance. He eventually leaves Russia for an undisclosed location, and his departure bookends the record he smuggled out. The final images do not restore the school or the people missing from it; they preserve their faces against the state’s attempt to turn them into symbols.

Talankin’s escape is practical survival, not victory over the system he documents. By leaving, he loses the ordinary community that gave his work meaning, but remaining would have placed both him and the footage at risk. The ending recasts his modest job as resistance: the same camera intended to celebrate patriotic conformity becomes evidence of how that conformity was manufactured. His archive is both a service to the absent students and a tribute to the life the war hollowed out, making memory the one thing he can still rescue.
